A Pearl of Great Price

Today, I visited with a mom who was going to pawn her wedding ring so that she could pay rent rather than face eviction. (Unknown to her, the husband stopped paying the rent several months ago due to a drinking issue.) She was determined to keep her son in a safe place.

Last month I was talking to a mother who was selling her furniture to provide some school clothes for her children. This whole month we have seen thousands of refugee families leaving the violence of Syria – trying to find a safe place in which to raise their children.

In our own city, our children face terrible violence every day. Many children are in schools where there are insufficient resources and not nearly enough teachers. Right now some of our children are simply sitting in a classroom, coloring pictures or taking a nap because the school system is short 20 special- ed teachers and nearly 200 regular teachers. Don’t all of our children deserve a good education?

Are not our children a pearl of great price--the treasures of our future? Don’t our precious children deserve the best possible use of our state’s resources for their education and safe living? What are you willing to pay for the positive future of all of our children?
