Today a man, probably in his 40’s, approached me and asked me for a calendar. He was a fine man with a gentle spirit. I gave him a copy of our Capuchin Soup Kitchen calendar, and he expressed deep gratitude saying how artful the photos were. I asked if he had seen our calendar from the Capuchin Community Services in Milwaukee. I showed him a 2012 version saying it consisted mainly of portraits. He began looking at the photos and wanted to read each caption. He said he thrives on the sayings that are printed in that way. He then offered one that has shaped his life and which he keeps before his mind daily. It goes like this, “It is better to have been prepared for an opportunity and not receive it than not to be prepared and missed an opportunity that passed on by.” He asked for the calendar from Milwaukee, but I explained that it was the only copy I had, so he said he wanted to come back and write down the saying that goes with each photo. I’m looking forward to seeing him again and may just find another copy of that old calendar!
