Resurrection is still happening in our world today

I was thinking of resurrection stories as we celebrated Easter, and an incident came to mind that happened on Good Friday. I participated in the Good Friday Walk at Conner when about 25 of us walked several blocks of the neighborhood doing a revised and shortened version of the “Stations of the Cross” while praying for hurting people in the city and for peace in our neighborhoods, the city and our world as we carried a large cross draped in purple.

After the walk, I ate lunch at Conner and sat with a man who had been on the walk. As we were eating, Will, the social worker, joined us and then a woman came up to ask him for a bus ticket. He replied that he did not have any. Just then, this gentleman spoke up taking his wallet out saying that he had one. He gave it to her explaining that it had two rides on it. He then said, “God told me to do that. The tickets are for my search for a job, and it’s my job to help people, so I had to do that.” He went on to explain that he had been shot by a teen three times in the neck in the 90’s, and the day after the shooting the bullets came out of his neck. It was at that time that his life changed, and he turned from drugs. The youth turned from buying the drugs, and a drug dealer turned from selling them and bought a truck to sell meat. All three men made a drastic switch from what they had been doing and regained life in a whole new way. You might say each one experienced his own resurrection and became a new person. Three lives were saved that day.

Happy Easter and may God give you peace,
