Soup Kitchen / Hot Meals
The Conner Kitchen was opened in early 1998
in part as a response to Michigan's welfare-to-work
initiative. Located in one of the initiative's pilot
areas, the Conner Kitchen serves working families and
seniors. As many as one-third of its meals are served
to children 12 and under. With the introduction of an
evening meal at Conner, a nourishing meal awaits children
after school and adults after work.
Supplemental programs and services at the Conner location
also seek to meet client needs. The Rosa Parks Children's
Library enriches young minds with more than 7,000
books and tutoring services. Art therapy programs
teach them to express their emotions in a productive,
creative way. In The Children's Peace Garden,
children plan, plant, and maintain flowers, vegetables
and herbs while learning the value of work and their
own self worth. As they care for the earth, they are
taught to respect it and each other.
Job training for adults is also available at
Conner. Clients are tutored in the "soft skills"
of employment - such as the art of interviewing, resume
preparation and understanding basic work protocols.
A six-unit computer coaching center with Internet
access and volunteer coaches provides a bridge across
the digital divide by making state of the art PC technology
accessible.
