Charism Day

Also, yesterday we had our biannual “Charism Day” with our recently hired soup kitchen staff.  The group was a little smaller this time with seven people hired in the last six months.  Part of the day consists in a tour of the Earthworks Urban Farm.  Since it was raining and cold, we did the tour in place within the newest hoop house with the rain dancing on the plastic over-covering.  One of the Cap Corps volunteers, Robbie, stood among the beats, spinach and carrots to explain the origin and development of Earthworks from 1997 to the present.  My heart was warmed in the cool air as he explained how we are made of the same elements of the earth we were standing on and spoke of the desire to engender respect for the earth as we desire it for ourselves.  He then elaborated on the logic of being even more respectful of the human beings who appear to be discarded by society.  There is no doubt that Robbie has absorbed the true Capuchin Franciscan charism. -Br.
