First Black Foreman

Recently, I was walking into the Capuchin Services Center, and a woman in her 60’s stopped me and said, “Here, I have something to show you.”  She pulled out an old black and white photo of her grandfather standing with another gentleman in front of the famed Packard Plant here in Detroit.  She proudly stated that he was the first black foreman to be hired at the plant.  The plant has been closed for Packard production since 1954, and it has been abandoned for a number of years.  In fact, it is one of the largest abandoned buildings (if not the largest) in the country.  But, her photo tells the story of when “back in the day,” it was up and running, and producing new Packard automobiles. -Br.
