Mother’s Day Breakfast of Gratitude

The Rosa Parks Youth Program of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen recently held a Mother’s Day Breakfast of Gratitude. Mothers, Grandmothers, and Aunts all enjoyed the delicious breakfast prepared by the soup kitchen staff. The guest speaker Ms. Kay Brundidge, a well known evangelist in Detroit, blessed the group with stirring words of affirmation:

“You are special to God, You are gifted by God. You are gifted with love, with encouragement, with compassion, and with peace.”

Table discussions invited each woman to name a gift she has and gifts they see in each other. The event ended with a blessing for mothers and for all people who create and sustain life.

Thinking about mothers these past days brought me many memories of my own mother, aunts, grandmothers and so many teachers who affirmed and encouraged spirit and gifts in me and in so many others.  All of us can plant seeds of life. All of us can nurture life—so in a way all of us can be “mothers” our whole life long.
