Summer In Detroit

The Detroit School year is nearly over and on Tuesday, 10 June, the Rosa Parks Program celebrated all the accomplishments of the current school year. Numerous children received awards for best attendance, peaceful spirit, creativity, study habits, most improved and those awesome participants who embody great spirit of courage, respect and participation in an outstanding way. I looked at all these children and teens and felt overwhelmed by their goodness, their energy and their giftedness.

Yet, many of these same children told me several weeks ago, how hard summer is for them—especially in our many low-income homes with no transportation. “Nothin to do and no place to go…Summer is so boring.” Some of our children dread the end of the school year as it means no contact with friends. Most of our children have never heard of a summer vacation.

Hopefully, these children will be encouraged to join some of the many possible summer activities that the Capuchin Soup Kitchen sponsors. Hopefully, the summer months can be an enriching and positive experience for all Detroit children.
