The Capuchin presence in Detroit dates to the 1883 establishment of St. Bonaventure Monastery and Chapel. In the face of extreme need at the onset of the Great Depression, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen formally began operations on Novemver 2, 1929, and has remained in continuous operation ever since.

The Order of Friars Minor Capuchin were founded in Italy in the 1520s as a reform of the Franciscan Order. The Capuchins sought to work closely and directly with the poor. Capuchins can be found around the world ministering in soup kitchens, hospitals, on the streets and in parishes and schools.
