Ministry Statistics

Detroit, despite its legacy as a global manufacturing, design and engineering hub, has the highest poverty rate of any big city in the United States. Since 1929, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen has been offering hope and alleviating suffering caused by poverty, disinvestment and deindustrialization.

In 2025, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen provided 240,712 meals at our Conner and Meldrum soup kitchens, an increase of 2 percent over 2024. We are serving approximately 1,000 meals per day at our two meal program sites as well as delivering freshly-prepared meals at Deo Gratias Ministries on the city’s northwest side. We thank all of you for your dedicated support of our ministry. Learn about different ways to support us.

Rising need

Since 2022, there has been a trend of increasing need at our two meal program locations.

There has also been a staggering 151% increase in visitors to our Capuchin Services Center food and clothing pantry from January 2022 to December 2025.

We served 91,368 meals at this location in 2025, a 23 percent increase from the prior year. Approximately 400 meals a day are served at the Meldrum Community Center. Our Meldrum guests are typically male, experiencing homelessness or in unstable housing, often diagnosed with a mental illness and/or substance abuse addiction.

We provided an opportunity for individuals to receive a shower at this location. Our facility provides showers and a change of clothing each day to give those in need a fresh focus and an increased sense of dignity and self-worth.
